[ Perceptible to anyone who's not looking. Buck doubt he fully intends to ask around at all — he'll make discrete inquiries. There can't be that many cat owners here, and ultimately... there's too many monsters around here even to absolve this sweet kitten of it completely. It's Haven. Yao likes to screw with things. ]
Later. Let's get her checked out, make sure she's healthy. Korra should be at the clinic.
Alright. [The clinic is a good idea. Even if he believes the kitten to be well, it is definitely better to get someone like Korra to take a look.
Snug with Damian carrying her, the kitten decides they have gone far too long without paying any attention to her, and she reaches a paw up to swat at Damian's nose. For a second, Damian is startled and then yet again his entire face breaks out into a grin, just as unrepentant as the last.]
I apologize, I should have considered your opinion as well. Is it alright if we take you to the clinic? [The words are directed at the kitten who gives a high pitched 'mew' in response. Damian nods seriously.]
Tt. Please. She has better sense then to take you at face value. [Also Damian is endearing the kitten to him with consistent scritches under her chin.]
[Damian follows him in, setting Elizabeth down on the table once they're inside and continuing to run his fingers down her coat.]
I'll need to find a bed for her. I'm sure I can find the blankets and pillows necessary in Haven North. [It's too bad there likely won't be any satin or silk available.]
[A harlot is more like. But estranged or not, Mother would never abide by him using such language to describe a woman and there are some parts of his upbringing that have stuck with him.]
I have never bothered to ask how she came to have that name. [And there's distaste in the way he says 'she' because Damian has never bothered to conceal his feelings about Selina Kyle. (Who is most certainly not and never will be his step-mother. >|
Even if she had great taste in animals.]
She is a thief. [Beat.] But she also makes it a point to rescue abandoned cats and provide homes for them. [Whatever, she gets a point for that he guesses.]
[He snorts.] Who said anything about a front? She is exactly who she appears to be. She has made a career out of stealing and fencing things that don't belong to her. She's a criminal. [Pause.] And she is obnoxious.
[Elizabeth takes a playful swat at Damian's hand as if in disagreement and Damian snorts. Not you too. In spite of her terrible opinions, Damian is careful to tuck the blanket around her and she burrows happily into the new source of warmth.]
[Damian opens his mouth and then closes it, an uncharacteristic expression of something almost sheepish on his face.
While the name had of course been derived from Mary Grayson as he had learned here in Haven, Grayson had mentioned Robin Hood as a childhood hero and although not responsible for the Robin title, it was certainly a connection that had been appreciated by Grayson as a boy.
Damian had done an embarrassing amount of research on the legend of Robin Hood upon learning that piece of Robin history. Eventually he nods, keeping his eyes on the cat.]
[Because that wouldn't be mortifying at all given his title. He rolls his eyes.]
You are presuming that she doesn't simply keep what she steals for herself. [Which she does. Mostly anyway. (The problem is of course, that whatever grudge Damian holds against Catwoman, it has nothing to do with her being a thief no matter what he claims, and everything to do with her being the sometimes recipient of his father's affection.
Of course since that is not a thought that he is even comfortable admitting to himself, it's hardly one that he can properly voice. It isn't that he expects his parents to get back together. He isn't that foolish. (It's just that it would be nice if the possibility remained, well, possible.)
Elizabeth chooses that moment to poke her head out of the blanket and take a swat at his hand, clearly feeling as though she has been ignored for too long. Damian indulges her with a few pets, all the while keeping his focus on Barnes.]
no subject
That's a good question. She can't have been out here long, and there aren't any animals larger'n cockroaches. You think she came with somebody?
no subject
It's unlikely. [And there is logic behind that, he swears. It's definitely not just because he doesn't want to give her up.]
I suppose we can ask around. Later.

Very well, it is settled then.

Does she look like an Elizabeth to you?
no subject
Hmm, yes I think Elizabeth will do. After the Queen I assume. [Because why wouldn't the kitten be named after royalty, Barnes.]
Elizabeth? [The kitten bumps her head against Damian's fingers and he takes that as a confirmation.] From here on out she will be Elizabeth.
no subject
Can I call her Lizzy? [ the kitten looks up at him ] Aw, you don't like that, darlin'? Beth? Betty?
no subject
Damian's lips twist in displeasure and he rolls his eyes.]
Elizabeth, Barnes. Elizabeth. [Don't insult her, Barnes. She's royalty. The kitten rubs her face against Damian's neck and Damian smiles.
Adorable royalty.]

[ Playfully, ] Ma'am. Elizabeth. [ he nods to the kitten ] Don't mind him, he can be stuffy. I'm the fun one.

Guess we wait. Hold on, let me see if there's any water here.

[ He finds an empty bowl, and no water. Bucky pours some out for her from his own canteen, and places it squarely in front of Elizabeth. ]
no subject
I suppose she could. Have you ever had a cat, Barnes?
no subject
No. Have you?
no subject
Yes.]I wasn't allowed. Too much of a distraction. [And that is proving to be pretty accurate as he can not take his eyes off of the ball of fluff.]
Did I ever tell you that there is a Catwoman from Gotham? Far inferior to Batman of course.

So people ain't the front they put up for others.
[ There's amusement in his voice as he returns to where they are with warm blankets for the cat. ]
Sound familiar?

Ever read about Robin Hood?

Of course I have, Barnes.

[ Just saying. The world's not as black and white as Damian thinks and if he's so determined to help people, he needs to know the shades of grey. ]

[ Because there's a difference, and Gotham is a hard town with a demanding War of its own. ]
Anyway. How's she doin'? Settling in to her new blanket kingdom?
